General Information
- Paperwork Due: Wednesday at 12:00 PM MST the week before the assignment starts.
- Permanent Address Requirement: Must be at least 25 miles from the facility.
Unit Details
- Beds: 24
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4
- Nights: 1:4–5
Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS (preferred)
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- Pre/post cardiac procedures
- Heart catheterizations (femoral & radial)
- Cardioversions (performed on the floor)
- Cardiothoracic surgery patients
- Post-thoracotomy (directly from PACU)
- CABG patients (24 hours post-op)
- Post-PCI patients
- Coronary stents
- Vascular procedures
- NSTEMI
- Tracheostomy patients
- Home ventilator patients
- Tracheostomy patients requiring BiPAP/CPAP
- Chest tubes
- Note: Pacer wires are typically removed in the ICU.
Required Experience / Must-Have Skills
Candidates should have experience with:
- Pre/post heart catheterization patients
- Coronary stents
- Pacemakers
- ICDs
- CABG (pre/post-op)
- Vascular surgery (pre/post-op)
Preference: Strong cardiac stepdown experience rather than general telemetry experience.
IV Drips
RN Titration:
- Some drips are titratable; some are not.
- Non-titratable: Dobutamine, Dopamine
- Common drips:
- Cardizem
- Amiodarone
- Dopamine
- Nitroglycerin
- Dobutamine
- Integrilin
Telemetry
- Monitor technicians perform:
- Continuous monitoring
- Rhythm interpretation
- Measurements
- Documentation
- Travelers are not required to be telemetry experts or interpret their own strips.
Leadership
- Charge Nurse:
- Days: No patient assignment
- Nights: Carries 1–2 patients
- Rapid Response (ARR) Nurse: Available
Support Staff
Nurse Aides
- Days: 1:8
- Nights: 1:12
Respiratory Equipment
- BiPAP
- CPAP
- Home ventilators
- Home ventilator experience is not required.
Scheduling
- Shift: 6:45 AM–6:45 PM / 6:45 PM–6:45 AM (12-hour shifts)
- Self-scheduling available
- Block scheduling allowed (more common on nights)
Weekend Requirements
- Every other weekend or
- Four weekend shifts per month
- Flexible for both day and night shifts
Holiday Requirements
Rotating coverage for six major holidays:
- New Year's Day
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
Call Requirement
- None
Floating
- May float according to the same rotation as permanent staff.
Dress Code
- Navy blue scrubs
