Title: Assistant Extension Specialist (Community Nutrition)

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  1. Provide leadership in program management, service delivery, training and technical assistance for USDA Food and Nutrition Programs (for example and in particular, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-ED) and Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)) that address food and nutrition security.
  2. Provide leadership, management and staff supervision, coordination, curriculum and materials development in community nutrition education.
  3. Collaborate with the US Affiliated Pacific Community with outreach networking, cooperation, materials and resources development, educational technology, non-formal education methods and techniques, needs assessment and outcome evaluation.
  4. Obtain extramural funding for programs in community nutrition.
  5. Participate in statewide community nutrition education training and technical assistance.
  6. Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate a statewide community nutrition extension program.
  7. Cooperate and collaborate with professionals and administrators in state-wide programs.
  8. Teach undergraduate and graduate classes related to community nutrition and nutritional sciences in line with departmental priorities.
  9. Maintain a scholarship profile by contributing towards scholarly achievements and making scholarly contributions to the profession.
  10. Supervise students (undergraduate and graduate levels) and interns in community nutrition field/practicum.
  11. Participate in HNFAS programs and CTAHR Extension programs

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A Master’s degree in nutritional sciences or related discipline with a focus on human nutrition, and 30 credits of graduate study from a college of university recognized standing in a field relevant to the position involved
  2. At least three years of experience in the appropriate area at the next lower rank, or its equivalent.
  3. Research experience with community nutrition based in the US affiliated Pacific region.
  4. Experience in teaching community nutrition or courses related to nutritional sciences.
  5. Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
  6. Ability to develop and lead an extension program.
  7. Thorough knowledge of current community nutrition research and extension literature and other sources of nutrition information.
  8. Ability to communicate technical concepts, orally and in writing, to a non-technical audience

Desirable Qualifications: 
 

  1. A doctoral degree in nutritional sciences or related discipline.
  2. Postdoctoral training in nutrition or related discipline with a focus on nutritional sciences.
  3. Peer-reviewed publications in nutritional sciences and thorough knowledge of current nutritional sciences research and extension literature.
  4. Experience working with local communities and applied human nutrition science to provide food and nutrition service to vulnerable communities and families.
  5. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to teach college or university-level courses.
  6. Demonstrated ability to generate independent extension and research reports, publications and grant proposals.
